more » Historically, for card payment, retailers have had to engage payment processors and a bank or multiple banks to obtain a terminal and/or a merchant ID for online transactions. The terminal or multiple terminals needed, at times, to accept both credit/debit cards and stored value cards are leased from the payment processor for the life of the device or for a predetermined period. As well, and perhaps more importantly, credit/debit card processing rates are not standardized but rather are negotiated based on, in theory, average ticket price and volume as well as the type of card used. The definition of type of card varies not only by the generic credit/debit card names (i.e. Visa, Mastercard, Discover, American Express, CHASE Debit, CitiDEBIT etc) but also by the category of card (Standard, Platinum, Signature, Corporate, Airline Card etc). The combination of names and categories is numerous and growing as the credit/debit card industry becomes increasingly issuance-focused.

In addition to credit/debit cards, retailers and e-tailers offer customers other cards — stored value cards, gift cards and loyalty cards — which, today, when used cannot be linked with the credit/debit card process into a single network but rather require multiple rail systems to be completed. Therefore, information gathered through one system is not integrated with information of the other system — an efficiency nightmare which results in lost opportunities and, increased costs. As gift/stored value cards and loyalty programs begin to gain greater penetration into the consumer marketplace, so will the costs to the retailers to produce, activate and process such cards.
